DUAL-USE · TECHNOLOGY AND DEVELOPMENT
What is dual-use technology? Applications and project assessment
Dual-use describes technology with civilian and defence or security applications. A project’s value is supported by specific user needs, demonstrated functionality and readiness for its intended environment.
The same technology, different requirements
NATO DIANA describes dual-use through applications in civilian and defence or security settings. Having possible uses in two sectors does not establish deployment readiness in both. Users, data, procedures and operating conditions can differ substantially.
For example, sensor data analysis could support industrial infrastructure assessment and operator situational assessment in a defence setting. Both scenarios need defined data sources, analysis quality and ways to handle errors.
Examples of dual-use application areas
Digital asset identity can support documenting business objects and recording equipment. Image analysis can assist technical inspection and selected infrastructure monitoring. Communications and data processing can support civilian teams and users operating in more demanding conditions.
These are application categories, rather than a list of ready-made Authify products. Ask what is demonstrable, what still needs research and what has been tested with intended users.
How can project maturity be assessed?
Ask about the problem, the intended user and how the task is performed today. Then establish which components work, which data was used and the conditions in which testing took place. A product film and a working prototype are different forms of evidence.
Identify remaining work: integrations, data access, field testing, limited-connectivity operation or access controls. For AI analysis, ask about false alarms, missed events, data quality and the human role in decisions. Reported performance should include the measurement method.
Why do two applications not establish two ready markets?
A civilian use case can help develop components and understand user needs. Defence adaptation often requires separate testing and changes. Another customer may have distinct procurement, security and information disclosure requirements.
In collaboration or funding discussions, separate available features, prototypes and plans. Technology ownership, supplier dependencies, next development goals and verification also matter. The dual-use label alone does not establish commercial success.
How is Authify developing in this direction?
Authify is a Kraków-based project developed by AUTHIFY P.S.A. Its business area covers digital collection documentation, certificates and optional NFC. The Defence direction includes Asset Intelligence under development — equipment condition and usage history — and Threat Intelligence: AI-supported infrastructure analysis.
The Defence website describes technology in development. We do not claim completed military pilots or operational deployments. Potential partners can discuss a specific application and demonstration scope. Team information and funding terms are not currently published.
