NFC · DIGITAL TRUST

What does an artwork’s NFC certificate confirm?

An NFC check can connect a physical identifier to a digital record and help verify that connection within a system. It is not, by itself, an expert assessment of authorship or proof of a complete provenance history.

Separate three different questions

Does the tag correspond to the record? What information and documents does the record contain? What evidence supports attributing the artwork to a particular artist? These are different questions. A matching-identifier message answers only the verification question defined by the system.

A digital certificate can present an object description, issuer, date and supporting documents. Its value depends on the information sources and checking process. Ask who issues the certificate and which statements they take responsibility for.

What can an NFC check look like?

A user holds a compatible phone near a tag and opens the linked record or verification page. Reading depends on the phone, tag and implementation. Access to a web page may require an internet connection.

For example, a check might open record OB-001 with an image, description and issuer document. The user also checks whether the displayed information describes the object in front of them. This illustrates a workflow; it is not a confirmed customer deployment.

A web link and authentication are different mechanisms

Storing a web address on a tag does not itself cryptographically establish the tag’s origin. Some tags support additional authentication mechanisms. NXP documents these features in selected NTAG products; they are not features of every NFC tag.

Protection depends on the tag, system verification, key management and how the tag is associated with the object. This describes available technology, rather than claiming that every Authify service uses a particular chip.

What does a positive result leave unresolved?

A matching identifier alone does not establish the artist, complete documentation or whether a tag has ever been transferred. These questions need an appropriate process, evidence and sometimes expert appraisal.

NFC is not a GPS transmitter. A proximity check does not continuously track an object’s location. Public information should be agreed separately from private collection documentation.

Five questions before choosing certification

Ask who issues the certificate, where information comes from, what verification means, how damaged or replaced tags are handled, and whether documentation can be retained and exported. Request a sample certificate and a check demonstration before agreeing on the service.

Authify connects object documentation, digital certificates and optional NFC identification. A project discussion establishes the goal, information and scope of the connection to a physical object. Start with a collection and the documents you already hold.
